Review and Thanks - Adam Roberts
Monday MArch 4th
The KICK-OFF tournament at South Surrey Athletic Park served as the inaugural event for the 2024 senior boys rugby season, bringing together teams from various regions. Hosted by Bayside RFC, the tournament not only kickstarted the competitive season but also embodied the true essence of rugby: camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a passion for the game. As the gracious hosts of the tournament, Bayside RFC played a pivotal role in ensuring its success. Opening their clubhouse to participants and spectators alike, they exemplified the hospitality synonymous with rugby culture. The club's dedication to fostering a welcoming environment not only provided a comfortable space for teams to gather but also set the tone for the entire event. Bayside RFC's efforts behind the scenes were instrumental in laying the foundation for an unforgettable day of rugby.
Among the participating teams, Oak Bay and Kelowna stood out for their remarkable dedication and commitment. Despite the considerable distance they had to travel, both teams embraced the challenge, embodying the adventurous spirit of rugby. Their willingness to embark on the "giant trek" demonstrated their passion for the sport. That being said I appreciate everyone’s willingness to attend the event and commit to a great afternoon of rugby! In all, 12 teams Participated (EMS, St.Georges, Kelowna, Oak Bay, Kitsilano, Abby Collegiate, Yale, Grandview, South Delta, LA Matheson, and Lord Tweedsmuir) everyone was assured 4 x 20 minutes of rugby and broke out similar to a 7’s tournament.
No rugby tournament is complete without the presence of referees, whose impartiality and expertise are essential for maintaining the integrity of the game. At the KICK-OFF tournament, the referees played a crucial role in ensuring fair play and upholding the rules of the sport, earning the respect and appreciation of all involved. Their dedication to officiating matches with integrity and professionalism contributed significantly to the smooth running of the tournament and the enjoyment of participants.
What truly set the KICK-OFF tournament apart was the palpable sense of unity and shared purpose among all involved. Regardless of their backgrounds or affiliations, everyone came together with a common goal: to celebrate rugby and foster its growth. Whether it was players giving their all on the field, coaches providing guidance and support, or spectators cheering from the sidelines, the collective passion for the sport was unmistakable. Beyond the competitive aspect, the tournament served as a platform for building connections, forging friendships, and inspiring the next generation of rugby enthusiasts. In this spirit of collaboration and camaraderie, the KICK-OFF tournament epitomized the true essence of rugby as more than just a game but a way of life.
